This piece of work looks at the world of advertising from the consumer’s perspective. We are all subjected to viewing thousands of adverts daily. We have no choice in the matter; it is just a way of life. We live our lives through adverts. They decipher what we buy, where we go and what we like and dislike. You may think adverts do not affect you, but they do so more than you think. There are a lot of techniques used by ad agencies to make their ads more persuasive and stick in the minds of the consumer. Even if you do not remember any of the adverts you see during the day, no doubt they are in your subconscious working their magic. It is advertising that has helped the economics of Great Britain soar since the industrial revolution. It has helped increase the sales of items, therefore increasing the company’s profits, and this has resulted in our economic growth.
Our country has changed dramatically over the past century. There are a lot more industrial sites taking over our natural landscape. The bustling centers of our material world are saturated with advertisements and they are slowly spreading outwards, taking over and destroying the places we go to get away. So for this piece of work the artist wanted to show the effect that advertising has had on our country and also in the minds of the consumer. The artist has taken photographs of nature to represent the places that have not been affected by the commercial world and has then partly destroyed the negative by burning and etching into them, to symbolize the effect of advertisements.
